Description
2005 $1 Gallipoli 1915 - 2005 Silver Proof Coin To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the ANZACs landing at Gallipoli the Royal Australian Mint, Australia's national mint, has released a $1 Fine Silver Proof Coin to honour those who lost their lives. Gallipoli holds a unique place in the hearts of all Australians. It is where, from dawn on 25 April 1915, Australian soldiers leapt from landing boats and fought with determination and spirit. The whole Gallipoli operation cost 28,000 Australian casualties, including over 8,700 deaths. Dr Vivienne Thom, the Controller of the Mint said "At that time Australia was a new nation and for the first time, Australians from all over the country came together to go into battle. The ANZAC legend was born and the events at Gallipoli form an important part of what it means to be Australian." Royal Australian Mint designer, Vladimir Gottwald has created a silhouette image of an Australian bugler playing the Last Post as the sun sets over the beaches of Gallipoli. The beauty of the design lies in its simple message 'Lest We Forget' and is an opportunity for us to remember and honour the sacrifices of the more than 102,000 Australians who have died in wars and conflicts. Given the strength of military themes, united with one of the most stylish, moving designs in Australia's currency history, this may one day be considered the most sought-after of the series. More than just a collector coin of outstanding quality, presentation and value, this poignant memorial to the ill-fated Gallipoli landing is sure to be pursued by all sectors of the coin collectors community.
