**Item as pictured. Guaranteed authentic.** Over 40 years ago, Thailand faced problems with drug trafficking and slash-and-burn agriculture practiced by hill tribes in the north. Furthermore, it was during the period of the communist insurgency that spread throughout the ASEAN region. With the foresight of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who desired that the hill tribes be able to "stand on their own two feet" and cease migration to mitigate these problems, he made numerous visits to various hill tribe communities in many provinces. Each time, he introduced the cultivation of temperate climate crops, which helped to end the war on drug cultivation and slash-and-burn agriculture in Thailand. At the same time, in 2006, the solution to the problem of hill tribes, a number of Thai citizens who lacked legal recognition, progressed across the digital age. The number of hill tribes facing various problems and those eligible for Thai citizenship were compiled into a database for management purposes. And to continue the process of granting Thai citizenship to stateless people, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej created "Commemorative Medals for the Hill Tribes." The front of the medal features a portrait of King Rama IX, and the back depicts a map of Thailand. Each medal is stamped with the abbreviation of the province and an identification number, serving as a unique identifier for each hill tribe member. His Majesty distributed these medals to hill tribe people in approximately 20 provinces, totaling over 200,000 medals. Each medal has the abbreviation of the province stamped on the back. Each coin is also numbered as follows: 1. Kamphaeng Phet (KP) 2. Prachuap (PK) 3. Phetchaburi (PB) 4. Loei (LY) 5. Lamphun (LP) 6. Uthai Thani (UN) 7. Phetchabun (PCH) 8. Phitsanulok (PN) 9. Ratchaburi (RB) 10. Lampang (LP) 11. Nan (NN) 12. Tak (TK) 13. Chiang Rai (CR) 14. Mae Hong Son (MS) 15. Chiang Mai (CM) 16. No stamp, Sukhothai (ST) - very rare. There are also four other provinces with hill tribes but no information on their coins: 1. Kanchanaburi 2. Phrae 3. Suphanburi 4. Phayao (included within Chiang Rai province at that time, before it was separated into provinces). Therefore, these commemorative coins for the hill tribes were considered akin to identification cards. For the hill tribe people, carrying these coins indicated that they had been registered as Thai citizens. |
