Mask of Plague Doctor 2 oz Antique finish Silver Coin 5$ Niue 2019
DESCRIPTION
This frightening 2 oz silver coin continues the “Masks” series. It is dedicated to the symbol of the “Black Death” plague – the Pestilence Mask.
Black leather coat, glass eyes, and a long bill-this was the outfit of doctors who had fought the plague epidemic hundreds of years ago. The mask was probably invented by Charles de Lorme, an outstanding physician from the court of Henry IV, Louis XIII and Louis XIV.
A characteristic bird mask, which backs in times of epidemics brought salvation and hopes for many, now became a symbol of “black death” in pop culture.
The reverse of the coin contains a wonderfully detailed image of a doctor fighting the epidemic in a traditional costume from the past on a background made of patients who could not be saved. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin features high relief made with the medalist technique. It has a beautiful selective gold plating with .999 gold and comes in an exposition case, together with the Certificate of Authenticity. The mintage is limited to 500 pieces for global distribution.
