History of the creation of the Emerald Buddha coin To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Rattanakosin
in 1927, His Majesty King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) appointed a committee to renovate Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram in time for the celebration of Bangkok, which would be its 150th anniversary in 1932. His Majesty graciously appointed His Royal Highness Prince Paribatra Sukhumbhand, Prince of Nakhon Sawan, as the chairman of the committee. He intended for members of the royal family, government officials, and the general public to have the opportunity to make merit on this occasion by creating a sacred object, “Emerald Buddha Coin,” to be distributed as a souvenir to those who donated money.
1. Donors of 100 baht or more will receive a gold Emerald Buddha coin.
2. Donors of 20 baht or more will receive a silver Emerald Buddha coin.
3. Donors of 5 baht or more will receive a silver Emerald Buddha coin. Nickel (Alpaca)
4. Donors from 1 baht and up will receive a copper Emerald Buddha coin.
The Emerald Buddha coin celebrates the 150th anniversary of Bangkok in 1932. The designer is His Royal Highness Prince Vajirananavarorasa.
There are many blocks and 4 types: 1. Gold 2. Silver 3. Nickel (Alpaca) 4. Copper.
Characteristics: It is a round stamped coin.
The front is an image of the Emerald Buddha in meditation posture, sitting on an inverted lotus base, inside a glass pavilion. There is a celestial cloth hanging and flowers all around.
The back of the coin is an image of the Krong Chakra Yantra. There are Khmer characters that appear in the yantra which can be read as Di Saṃ Wa Kaṃ Aa Wa Sa Saṃ, which is an abbreviation of “the Eightfold Path”, namely
