During the Rattanakosin period, King Mongkut (Rama IV) was the first to initiate a royal tour to the northern provinces1 to visit the people and inspect the affairs of distant provinces in the royal territory. Later, in 1901 (1901), King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) followed his father’s example by traveling to the northern provinces to survey the lives and livelihoods of the people, various problems, and the duties of civil servants. His Majesty also wished to bestow souvenirs on the royal tour.
Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy commemorative medal This coin was graciously commissioned by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn to be created as a gift to boys and girls who came to greet him at various locations during his royal tour of the northern provinces. This truly demonstrates His Majesty’s love and compassion for his people. The bestowal of commemorative Sema coins to children began on October 5, 1901, at the royal reception pavilion in Chainat. Throughout the royal tour, citizens would bring their children to await His Majesty’s arrival to receive the commemorative Sema coins directly from His Majesty. The Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy (
CPMA) commemorative Sema coins are shaped like Sema coins with a tube on top for threading a rope. On the front, the royal initials “CPMA” are displayed beneath a radiant crown, and the inscription “King Chulalongkorn, Chulalongkorn, bestowed” is written all around them. The reverse side has no image or text. Made of gold and silver, weight 16.97 grams, diameter 3.90 cm, thickness 0.25 cm.
