It is common practice for mints and nations to issue modern bullion coins that celebrate some of the most beautiful coin designs from world history. The Niue Athena Owl coins reach back more than 2,000 years to revive the Athenian Owl Tetradrachm silver coin design.
Coin Highlights:
- 4th year of issue for the Athena Owl Stackable series!
- Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver in BU condition.
- Issued a face value of $2 (NZD) backed by Niue.
- The obverse face of the coin bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
- On the reverse side is an Athenian owl on a branch with a crescent moon and olive sprig.
Both sides of the coin have a unique background design element that completes the ancient look and feel of the products. That background field includes a hammered or stippled, finish that replicates the look of the Athenian Owl Tetradrachm as it would have appeared when initially produced in Greece.
The obverse side of the 2020 1 oz Niue Silver Athena Owl Stackable Coins includes the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted in this release in right-profile relief. The portrait of the Queen featured here was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England and was used widely throughout the Commonwealth as well. Though British coins have moved on, New Zealand, Niue, and other Commonwealth nations still use this popular effigy of Her Majesty.
On the reverse field is a depiction of the images found on the ancient Tetradrachm. The 2020 1 oz Niue Silver Athena Owl Stackable coins feature the Athenian owl resting on a wooden branch. There is an olive sprig behind the owl, a crescent moon overhead, and an inscription of “AOE” on the right side of the design field.
