1 Baht banknote, Series 5, First Edition (Wat Phumin), Reign of King Rama VIII, 1942 (B.E. 2485), used condition.
**Item as pictured. Guaranteed authentic.** This 1 Baht banknote, Series 1, has Thai letters and a Thai number printed in the lower left corner on the front . During World War II, the Thai government was unable to order banknotes from Thomas De La Rue & Co. in England because England was on the Allied side. Thailand therefore faced a shortage of banknotes. The government then requested Japan to produce banknotes, with Mitsui Bussan Kaisha acting as an agent to contact the Japanese government’s banknote printing company. Later banknotes printed in Japan differed from earlier ones because Japan was heavily attacked by the Allied forces in later years, resulting in shortages of materials used for banknote production. The 1-baht banknote, Series 5, Model 1, was announced on September 10, 1942. Its size is 6.50 x 12.50 centimeters. The front of the banknote features a portrait of King Ananda Mahidol in the Chakri uniform on the right, with an image of Wat Phumin in Nan province on the left. In the center is a floral pattern as a background for the text “Government of Thailand,” with an image of an elephant (airavata) in the lower right corner. The serial number and letters are printed in red ink. The watermark is an image of the Constitution’s ceremonial tray. The back of the banknote… The main image is of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) in the Grand Palace, framed by a floral pattern. A warning about the penalties for counterfeiting banknotes is printed in the center at the bottom. The signatures on the banknote are those of the Ministers of Finance: General Pao Pienlert Boriphan Yutthakit (December 17, 1941 – August 1, 1944) , Khuang Abhaiwong (August 2, 1944 – January 10, 1945) , and Leng Srisomwong (January 10, 1945 – August 31, 1945). |
